BIO:

Beau Benson began his study of the guitar at the age of five, learning first from his father. At the age of nine, he began his study of classical music with guitarist and composer Brian Clement-Foreman. Beau currently attends the Meadows School of the Arts of Southern Methodist University on scholarship where he studies with Robert Guthrie. He has attended several master classes including those with such artists as Carlo Pezzimente, Duo Cuypers and Lop, Earnesto Garcia de Leon, Lucio Dosso, Nikita Koshkin, Juan Carlos Laguna, Mateo Mela, Roland Dyens, and Pepe Romero. In addition to his studies in the U.S. Beau has also received scholarships from Fleur de Son Classics and the D'Adarrio Foundation for the Performing Arts to study in Europe with the Castellani-Adriaccio Duo as part of the Guitar in Orvieto Festival. He won second place in the 2000 Hubbard Chamber Music Series Solo and Ensemble Competition as a soloist. In addition to teaching privately, Beau has given numerous performances in the U.S. and Italy appearing not only in solo recital, but also in concert with ensembles ranging from the J.J. Pearce Chamber Orchestra to the Guitar Orchestra of the United States and Mexico.

The DeVany-Hartzell Flute and Guitar Ensemble will perfom at Montgomery
College in the Fine Arts Building (Bldg D) at 7:30pm on Sunday, February
18th. Tickets will be $5 for children and Montgomery students,
$8 for GH members and $10 for the general public.
This concert will feature several solo classical guitar works plus several duets with flute.
Valerie will play solos in the first half of the program, including works by Barrios, Villa-Lobos,
Ponce & Dyens. Kelly will join Valerie in the second half of the program for a duo including works by
Iber, Granados, Ravel, and Giuliani.

BIO: Valerie Hartzell
Valérie Hartzell began her classical guitar studies on a half-size Ramirez at the age of three. At the age of six, she studied with maestro Alexandre Lagoya at the Académie Internationale d'Eté de Nice, France. She has participated in master classes with several internationally acclaimed artists, including Ako Ito, Castellani-Andriaccio Duo, David Russell, and Elena Papandreou.
In 1991, Ms. Hartzell made her debut performing Castelnuovo-Tedesco's "Concerto for guitar and orchestra" with the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving, Texas. She made her international debut in San Mamete, Italy at the Festival del Piccolo Mondo in August 1994. In May of 1998, she was a guest artist at the Arts Festival in Montagnola, Switzerland. Ms. Hartzell was re-invited to the Arts Festival in May of 1999, and was also invited to perform in Nice, France by the "Ars Antonina Association." Additionally, she won first prize at the Concours de Guitare Classique Heitor Villa-Lobos in Nice, FR and was a prizewinner at the ECU Guitar Competition in Greenville, NC.
At the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, Ms. Hartzell was awarded the highest undergraduate scholarship for the classical guitar and studied with Manuel Barrueco and Julian Gray earning her Bachelor's Degree in 1997. She was awarded a Graduate Teaching Fellowship at Radford University and was placed as Adjunct Faculty while studying for her Master's Degree in Music. She received her performance degree in May of 1999 and currently, she is Adjunct Faculty at Montgomery College. She is performing in the U.S. and Europe as a soloist and is performing in the Houston area with her flute partner Kelly DeVany.
BIO: Kelly DeVany
Kelly DeVany earned a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She has performed solo recitals in Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri and as a soloist with the Luther College Symphony Orchestra as a winner of the Concerto Competition. She has studied with Aralee Dorough, Steve Geibel, Carol Hester, Kaye Sahlin, and Caroline Ulrich and performed in a masterclass presented by Trevor Wye. She performs in the flute and guitar duo of DeVany & Hartzell.

Recitalist and artist teacher: Valerie Hartzell is gaining recognition in the Houston area as a solid
performer and instructor. Valerie is presenting a concert program in preparation for major international
guitar competition performance.
Texas Select Music will host this event at their facility in a beautiful, secluded 18-acre setting. The
recital hall has limited seating but has hardwood throughout with great acoustics.
Enjoy a day away from the city in a natural setting. Free beer and wine will be provided, with a
reception following the concert. This event is only $6, and is a great opportunity to meet others and
enjoy the scenery.

By popular demand, we are pleased to offer this week of intensive study of repertoire for voice and guitar. Under the leadership of institute directors Katherine Ciesinski, mezzo-soprano, and Valérie Hartzell, guitar, participants will explore this rich area of repertoire with private coaching and topical course offerings. Tuition, which is $225, includes all classes, lessons and lunch.
Katherine Ciesinski, founder and director of Close Encounters, is a world-renowned performer of opera and oratorio. As a recitalist, she has performed an extensive repertoire of chamber music, from traditional lied to contemporary works for a variety of instrumental combinations. She is Professor of Voice and chair of Vocal Studies at the Moores School.
Since her solo debut with orchestra in 1991, guitarist Valérie Hartzell has performed throughout Europe, the US, and Canada, including a television appearance in France. A prizewinner in major international guitar competitions, she is on the faculty at Montgomery College.
Anyone interested in participating must receive approval by sending either a tape or cd (solo repertoire acceptable). We encourage intermediate and advanced students to participate. Students should arrive in June prepared with music written for voice & guitar. If you need advice, contact Valerie Hartzell at (281) 259-6374. Many of you recall Matt Hinsley's outstanding performance at a recent Guitar Houston meeting.
Matt is a graduate student with Adam Holzman at U.T. of Austin. This year he won the "Music Teacher's
National Association" guitar competition. Matt has published 4 articles in Soundboard magazine, and his
new CD, "Live, In Austin" is available from the artist and from Amazon.com.
Flutist Jennifer Rhyne completed her master's degree in music and additional studies on scholarship in
Paris. Jennifer is pursuing a doctorate degree, and has won several competition finalist placements.
The guitar and flute mix very well, and a great deal of repertoire has been written for this combination
of instruments.

Our featured performer is Alejandro Montiel, who will give his senior college recital under the tutelage of Dr. Adam Holzman at UT-Austin. Following the scheduled performance, walk-on performances are welcome.

Alejandro Montiel BIO: A Guitar Major at the University of Texas in Austin, Alejandro has spent a great deal of his life honing his skills with the instrument he loves most. Focusing mainly upon 20th Century classical music, Alejandro has studied and performed pieces by composers such as Lauro, Brouwer, Berkley, and Verdery. In addition, he has been fortunate to perform in numerous master classes from outstanding performers and teachers such as David Russel, Ricardo Cobo, Bruce Holzman, Julian Grey and Eliott Fisk.
Alejandro has also cultivated an impressive list of credits to his professional portfolio.
· In 1998, he achieved the highest score in the Texas University Interscholastic League state competition.
· In 2001, he was named a 'Regional Competition Alternate' by the Music Teachers National Association, and toured Washington DC with the St. Luke's United Methodist Church youth choir.
· Collaborated with the Taylor Davis Trio in two recordings of Christmas songs and jazz standards.
· More recently, he led a sight reading class at the National Guitar Summer Workshop in Connecticut, in addition to acting as an assistant to Ricardo Cobo.
Scholastically, Alejandro's achievements are equally impressive. He has twice been a recipient of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Junior College Honors Society and the Golden Key National Honors Society. In winter of 2002 Alejandro will graduate UT with high honors.

Will Riley is active as both performer and teacher. He holds a Bachelor of
Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied with
Adam Holzman. Currently, Mr. Riley is pursuing his Master of Music degree on
scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of
world-renowned virtuoso Eliot Fisk.

Mitch Weverka
Professional guitarist Mitch Weverka, graduate of Robert Guthrie, will play a 40 minute set of classical guitar works. Walk-on classical guitar performances after the scheduled performance.
Mitch Weverka is from Fort Worth, Texas where he began playing the guitar at age seven, receiving most of his instruction from Bolivian guitarist/artist Oscar Valdez. He holds performance degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Southern Methodist University, and studied in Cremona, Italy where he lived for three years. His principal teachers were Robert Guthrie, Giovanni Puddu, Matteo Mela, and John Holmquist. As a student, he also performed in master classes for a long list of touring artists.
Mitch has been a finalist in numerous international competitions, winning top prize at four; the 6° Festival Internazionale della Chitarra (2001 Siracusa, Italy), The East Carolina Guitar Competition (2001 Greenville, North Carolina), The Oswald Rantucci Guitar Competition (1997 Buffalo, New York), and the Rovere d’Oro International Music Competition (1997 San Bartolomeo, Italy). While living in Italy he received a Diploma of Merit from the Academia Musicale Chigiana in Siena where he studied with Oscar Ghiglia.
Currently, Mitch lives in Fort Worth, Texas. He is adjunct faculty at Tarrant County College, and maintains a private studio. He is pursuing a master's degree at Texas Christian University, where he is part of a unique program in Educational Foundations directed by Sherrie Reynolds, Ph.D. Mitch is also a founding member and director of The Fort Worth Guitar Guild, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing guitar activities in North Texas, USA.

Though the six Rossiniane by Giuliani are well known amonst guitarist only the first two are frequently performed. The fifth, op.123, contains themes themes from "The Barber of Seville" and "Cinderella" ingeniously set on the guitar with the skill and refinement typical of the great italian virtuasos. Joan Manen's Fanasia-Sonata was comissioned by Segovia and subsequently recorded by him. It is a large scale work concevied in roughly three tempos meant to be performed without pause. Ernesto Garceia de León is a leading figure in the exciting contemporary guitar culture in Mexico City. He has composer well over seventy works for guitar. "Lejanias" is the fourth of eight multimovement sonata's that he has composed for solo guitar.
