Mike is hired by a playboy sportsman to supervise their underwater shark "safari" in the waters off Peru.

Scuba Guy Rating © 2003 Bill Jones:  3 tanks  Some of the most obvious cuts between fresh water and salt water for the entire series are done in this episode.  The "ocean" plants and divers are clearly in fresh water while bottom topography and visibility change for the shark and reef fish shots.  Sharks and divers are never in the same shot.  Viewers are taught numerous beginner Scuba rules.

An underwater camera holds the key to determining whether a woman's drowning was accidental, as her husband claims, or not.

Scuba Guy Summary © 2003 Bill Jones:  Mike gets an urgent message from diving buddy Tom Quinn, a Lieutenant with Los Angeles Homicide.  Tom suspects Mr. Tyler is responsible for his wife's death in a diving accident and wants Mike to help him review the facts.  In a flashback sequence, we hear Mr. Tyler's description of the dive suggesting that Maria had gone too deep.  Tyler is shooting pictures throughout the dive without a flash attachment.  Reviewing the pictures shot during the dive, Mike notices that the last picture shot at 70ft contained yellow images of Maria's helmet.  Since yellow is filtered out of the visible light spectrum at that depth, Tyler must be lying.  Mike and Tom plan a dive to trick Tyler into a confession.  During the dive, Tyler realizes he is being trapped and cuts Tom's air hose.  Mike fights Tom in the water and Tom confesses.

Scuba Guy Rating © 2003 Bill Jones:  4 tanks  Zale is so well liked by Sea Hunt producers she gets a credit and never speaks a line in the show.  A boat with the Argonaut name on edge-routed wooden signs is clearly seen but it is not the 1960 Trojan Sea Breeze of course.

Mike trains three brothers in the use of scuba gear, unaware that they plan to break a fourth sibling out of Alcatraz.

Scuba Guy Summary © 2003 Bill Jones:  Three brothers Larry, Johnny, and Frank Brand hire Mike to teach them how to Scuba dive.  After Mike spends five hours teaching, he tells the brothers to call it a day.  Mike returns to the dock a few hours later and Larry and Johnny are diving again.  Mike is concerned about how long they had been diving and goes down to bring them back up.  Mike becomes suspicious seeing the two exchanging wetsuits underwater.  Mike finds Frank's lost wallet and sees Frank's last name is Bronson.  Mike follows the brothers as they make another dive near Alcatraz with an extra set of diving gear for Mark Bronson, an escaping convict.  Mike sends up a marker buoy flair to signal for help and cuts Larry's air hose.  A patrol boat helps Mike capture the brothers.

Scuba Guy Rating © 2003 Bill Jones:  5 tanks  Lisa Gaye's topside performance steels the entire show.  Gaye has the key role and is far and away the most famous of the guest stars in the episode at that time, but she appears second in the guest-star credits.  What do you expect?  It's 1959.  Zale Parry doubles for Gaye in the underwater shots.  Gaye and Parry are both beautiful women but in no way look alike.

Robert Conrad landed this episode which was his first appearance on TV.   His one-line, uneventful, and dull bit part led to Conrad becoming a contract player at Warner Brothers.  Jack Warner gave Conrad his first starring role as Tom Lopaka in the successful TV series "Hawaiian Eye" (1959-63).

Underwater Sequences filmed in Silver Springs Florida, Water Ski Sequences filmed on location in Winter Haven Florida
Mike investigates the mysterious death of the featured performer in a water ski show during the act's underwater finale.

Scuba Guy Summary © 2003 Bill Jones:  Mike is hired as the safety man for a new stunt in a water ski show at a Cypress Gardens Thrill Show.  Mike sets up an underwater camera for a newsreel company to film the stunt.  Hal jumps from a water ski kite 100ft to the surface of the water.  Mike is concerned about Hal and dives to bring him up, but Hal does not survive.  Mike retrieves his underwater camera to find clues of cause of Hal's death.  Mike tricks Steve Garth into a trap and the police nail Steve.

Scuba Guy Rating © 2003 Bill Jones:  4 tanks  A great line in the show is when Mike says Steve knew every trick he knew (underwater).  A true statement since Brown taught Bridges almost everything he knew about Scuba diving in real life.  Lisa Gaye's performance is superb and she deservedly receives top guest-star credit this time.  This story is a very unusual example of someone being killed on the show but notice that the death is not related to Scuba diving.
