Donald Luskin - Insane Internet Stalker

Being an old hand at Usenet, I am of course familiar with Goodwin's Law. Yet I always thought there should be another law, let's call it "Dominion's Law of Loosing a Usenet Debate". It states that "when one side of the debate starts to look increasingly foolish, the probablity approches unity (1) that a lawsuit will be threatened". I should also mention that the person that threatens the lawsuit usually ends up looking even more stupid. Seems that this law will also apply to blogs.

Looks like Atrios over at Eschaton has upset Donald Luskin, a rather silly man who's main claim to fame seems to be an unhealthy obsession with Paul Krugman. Now I try like hell to avoid finding articles on right wing blogs to critique and Luskin's blog is an excellant example of why. After reading it, what is there to critique? Almost all of Luskin's ravings about Paul boil down to "I don't like the guy". This is raving in all it's finer forms.

Even better, Luskin himself has described what he does to Paul as "stalking" (see We Stalked. He Balked. The Truth Squad is getting to Mr. Krugman: National Review Online May 7, 2003) That he hates being called a stalker is apparent, here is his column complaining about Krugman identifying him as such.

As to stalking him personally, the one and only time I've ever even seen him in person was on October 6, 2003. I attended a lecture he gave at the University of California at San Diego as part of his tour to promote his book. I listened to the lecture. I videotaped parts of the event with a personal camcorder. Like many members of the audience, I submitted a written question to Krugman. And like many members of the audience, I stood in line to have him sign a copy of his book. I asked him to inscribe it to me, in the process of which he (naturally) realized my identity. He made the inscription, and I said to him, "Now you keep up the good work, Paul," and walked away. Krugman continued to sign autographs.

Yet look at the way he describes his visit at the time in an article he called "Face To Face With Evil"

When it was over and the audience exploded in cheering and applause again, I felt horrified and sick. All these months of holding Krugman accountable for all his lies, I've thought of my little crusade as being directed toward him -- but then I realized that the real liar is his audience: the people who are so afraid that they will believe his conspiracy theories and wish for his safety-netted low-ceilinged utopia -- or the people so cynically partisan that they will cheer anything and anyone, no matter how deceitful, if it is a means to their partisan ends. I realized that I can knock myself out fighting Krugman, and even if I succeed beyond my wildest dreams, all I will have done is eradicate a symptom. The disease is the people that adulate him. Tonight I spent two hours locked in a small room with those people. At the end, I just wanted to get the hell out and take a shower.

I had planned to get Krugman to sign a book to me -- and I overcame my sense of dread and revulsion, and did it. I waited in line for a few minutes while he banged out scrawled signatures by the dozen, and when he was done with mine, I asked, "Would you inscribe it to me personally?" He said, "Yeah, alright, what's your name?" I said "Don..." and he wrote Don. Then I said "Luskin: L-U-S-K-I-N..." and by the time he got halfway through... he realized. He started up with the ferret-like shifty-eyed thing like when he's on TV. I said "Now you keep up the good work, Paul." He muttered, "Yeah... yeah... fine..."

And I walked away, with my skin crawling, worried that I'd gotten too close to something infectious...

It was in reference to this article, in fact, where Atrios uses the term "stalking", calling it "Diary of a Stalker" and merely linking to this article. On the strength of what I read I would agree, it sure sounded like stalking to me. Downright creepy.

I totally sympathize with Atrios, as a person who has also been threatened with lawsuits I can attest it is a total drag. Everything kinda comes to a halt as you wonder if indeed you did something actionable. You also worry that those around you (such as your ISP, your website host...etc) will be made of stern stuff.

I used to have a website on WikiWeb, called "The Skeptical Wiki". I lost that website due to legal threats of one Shipi Shtrang, best friend and personal assistant to Uri Geller and to the gutlessness of the owner of the WikiWeb. See I had a 30 second clip of Uri bending a metal spoon using his hands, rather than that super special psychic power he claimed to have. Seems that Uri simply hated having that piece of video floating around...

As I pointed out when Jim Bomford tried to intimidate me, threatening a lawsuit is a chicken's way out. Luskin is not really interested in a suit, he wants to scare Atrios. He does this by threatening to "out" his real identity during the legal process. Gutless behavior.

So don't forget to go by Eschaton and leave a note of support. While your at it, drop by Luskin's blog and also leave a note. Tell him how much you appreciate a fellow blogger threatening a lawsuit, and send him the wish that Paul Krugman will do unto him what he is trying to do unto Atrios.

Dom Rumsfeld is in trouble!

And it could not have happened to a nicer guy!

Apparently Don is in big trouble and it is gonna cost money to fix it. Are you ready to pay?

Dear Dominion,

This is OUTRAGEOUS, and YOU are the one to fix it!

An American patriot -- a true American hero -- is under attack by the radical left in this country.

Since he returned to the Pentagon three years ago, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld has been instrumental in modernizing our nation's military into a 21st century fighting force.

Not only has he transformed the military, he gave us much-needed leadership at the Pentagon through the trauma of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the building and the ensuing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has stood STRONG in the war on terrorism.

Now, less than five months after he helped President Bush formulate and execute a bold plan in which a U.S. invasion force drove to Baghdad and toppled the dictatorial government of Saddam Hussein in 21 days, Secretary Rumsfeld is under attack -- by the same coalition of Socialist-led anti-war demonstrators and radical left-wing Hollywood "actors" that tried to undermine our fight against terrorism with their "blame America" tactics during the war.

These radical leftists, led by groups like MoveOn.org, have even gone so far as to take out a full-page ad in the New York Times, with a headline stating that Donald Rumsfeld "BETRAYED" our nation.

You read that right. These left-wing "hate America" radicals are calling Secretary Rumsfeld a TRAITOR, and demanding he be removed from office.

A *traitor*!!! This man is a former Navy pilot... the former U.S. Ambassador to NATO... a former U.S. Congressman... and was even the youngest secretary of defense in the nation's history back in the 1970s.

Secretary Rumsfeld was even awarded the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. And the socialist wannabes at MoveOn.org have the GALL to say this man BETRAYED our nation.

As far as we're concerned, the REAL traitors are the ones giving "aid and comfort" to America's enemies, by taking out full-page ads in nationally-distributed newspapers, attacking our leaders and heroes... and ultimately, our troops in the field.

It's time to FIGHT BACK against these radical leftists, and show America -- AND America's elite liberal media -- that the citizens of our country SUPPORT this modern-day American hero.

And we're going to do it just like we did once before: we're going to take out a FULL PAGE AD in a NATIONAL NEWSPAPER, giving a strong statement of support for Secretary Rumsfeld and our troops, and listing many of the groups who are standing strong with us in this endeavor. NO ONE will be able to IGNORE us at that point, regardless of whether the liberal media tries to cover their eyes and ears. WE WILL BE SEEN AND HEARD!

BUT... the cost for this ad is very high: $73,100. And we can't afford to make this statement to the whole country without your help TODAY.

ACTION ITEM: If every one reading this gave just $50, we could put that national full-page ad up *this week*. But we know that many of our patriotic readers just can't afford to give that much -- so some of you might be able to give more to make up for them, maybe as much as $100, $500, or even $1,000.

In fact, if you or your organization can give $2,000, we'll include your name prominently in the full page ad!

But whatever you can give -- even if it's only $10 -- we'll make YOUR support known right there -- in black and white -- in a full-page ad, distributed nationwide in USA TODAY. From New York to California... Florida to Washington... the nation's capital to every single state capital... Americans everywhere will see that they are not alone, and that the grassroots of this great nation support our President and our troops.

We're not a non-profit organization, so your contribution is NOT tax-deductible. But we promise this: every dollar that comes in to RightMarch.com for this project will be SPENT on this project. If we don't get enough to pay for a full page nationwide, we'll buy a half page, or a fourth page, or a full page in a single region... whatever we can afford with what you give. And if USA Today were to reject our ad (they DID accept our last full-page ad), we'll make SURE it still gets out there in newspapers distributed across the country.

Help us take the next shots in our "battle strategy" to counter the Socialist-led "blame-America" crowd. Go to the site below to help us pay for a FULL PAGE pro-American hero ad in USA Today:

NOTE: We don't want anyone to be left out. If you can't afford to give ANYTHING right now, go to http://www.ContactRumsfeld.com to send a FREE message in support of Secretary Rumsfeld and our troops. Be sure to forward this e-mail to everyone you know who wants to help "fight the battle" on behalf of patriotic Americans.

Thank you!

I went to the Contact Rumsfeld website, but I am afraid I did not offer him much support. Unless you consider such phrases as "American blood on your hands" support!

Go and tell Rummy what a bang up job he is doing. Share the love!

It looks as if the Republicans are gearing up for a battle over those stalled Judicial nominations:

Senate Republicans plan to begin actively fighting this week for several of President Bush's stalled judicial nominees in an effort to turn up the heat on Democrats who oppose their confirmations.

Up until now, Republicans appeared to be losing the struggle against Democrats, who have successfully blocked the confirmations of former Justice Department attorney Miguel Estrada, Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen and Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor.

Estrada, a Hispanic lawyer nominated for a seat on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, even withdrew himself from consideration after Republicans failed seven times to shore up the 60 votes need to cut off debate in the Senate.

But with the Senate quickly approaching a mid-November recess, syndicated columnist Robert Novak reported Monday that Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) plans a three-phased approach to confirm five judges, starting this week with U.S. District Judge Charles Pickering Sr. of Mississippi for a seat on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

If Republicans are unsuccessful, Frist would eventually attempt to change Senate rules by requiring only a simple majority to confirm a judicial nominee. Novak reported that a vote on the so-called "nuclear option" would likely take place in 2004.

At that time, President Bush would be in the midst of his re-election campaign, and as Novak reported, Republicans would be able to energize their conservative base around the issue.

EPA air pollution rules challenged:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Twelve states and several Northeast cities sued the Environmental Protection Agency on Monday to try to block the Bush administration's changes to the Clean Air Act.

EPA's new rule makes it easier to upgrade utilities, refineries and other industrial facilities without installing additional pollution controls.

The rule, which was proposed last December and signed by EPA's administrator in August, was made final on Monday. It will take effect in two months, and states have up to three years to comply.

EPA said in a statement it does not believe this rule will result in significant changes in emissions and that it "preserves the public health protections" under law.

However, attorney generals for the 12 states -- New York, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin -- and legal officers for New York City, Washington, D.C., New Haven and several other cities in Connecticut said the new regulations will weaken protections for the environment and public health.

Looks like Frank Rich may be on to something:

This is objective journalism as this administration likes it, all right - news you can't use. Until recently, the administration had often gotten what it wanted, especially on television, and not just on afternoon talk shows. From 9/11 through the fall of Saddam, the obsequiousness became so thick that even Terry Moran, the ABC News White House correspondent, said his colleagues looked "like zombies" during the notorious pre-shock-and-awe Bush news conference of March 6, 2003. That was the one that Mr. Bush himself called "scripted." The script included eight different instances in which he implied that Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11, all of them left unchallenged by the dozens of reporters at hand.

Six months later, the audience is getting restless. The mission is not accomplished. The casualty list cannot be censored. The White House has been caught telling too many whoppers, the elucidation of which has become a cottage industry laying siege to the best-seller list. Vanity Fair, which once ran triumphalist photos of the administration by Annie Leibovitz, now looks at this White House and sees Teapot Dome. The Washington Post, which killed a week of "Boondocks" comic strips mocking Ms. Rice a few days before her Oprah appearance, relented and ran one anyway last weekend on its letters page, alongside the protests of its readers.

Here is a good overview of how spam gets fried up and sent to your email box:

The problem of spam or unwanted commercial e-mail is usually attributed to outlaws and hucksters — peddlers of pornography, get-rich-quick schemes and pills of dubious merit - who use hackers to send their fraudulent messages in ways that cannot be traced.

But the torrent of spam that is flowing into people's electronic mailboxes comes not only from the sewers but also from the office towers of the biggest and most well-known corporations.

Established companies insist they send e-mail only to people who have voluntarily agreed to receive marketing offers. A spokeswoman for Palm says it does not know how Mr. Rathbun's e-mail address got into the hands of spammers and says it has never sold its customer list.

But often companies rent e-mail lists from a cottage industry that has emerged to lure Internet users, through a variety of schemes, into signing up for e-mail marketing.

Now this is just very very sad:

ABUJA, Nigeria (Reuters) -- Three states in northern Nigeria have suspended a polio immunization program led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) because they feared it spread AIDS and caused infertility, Nigerian officials said on Monday.

In Geneva, the WHO said there was no question about the purity or safety of the vaccine it used and warned that Nigeria was exporting the disease to neighbouring countries.

The mainly-Muslim states of Kano, Zamfara and Kaduna suspended the program last week, said Chinwere Chukwuani, a director at Nigeria's National Polio Immunization Office.

She told Reuters the suspension meant the debilitating disease could spread further in Nigeria, one of only seven countries where the virus is still prevalent and which has the highest number of cases in the world.

"They (the states) said they wanted to conduct tests on the oral polio vaccine to be sure it does not contain HIV and family planning materials," Chukwuani said.

The three states follow Sharia Law, a code of Islamic law which was introduced in the north of Nigeria in 2000, leading to sectarian riots and polarising the country.

Did the book-review editor of The Los Angeles Times order a hatchet job against a controversial book? Sure does look that way:

The publisher of a new book about the murder of Daniel Pearl claims the book-review editor of the Los Angeles Times ordered a hatchet job against the controversial tome because of a conflict of interest.

"Who Killed Daniel Pearl?" (Melville House), by French journalist Bernard-Henri Lévy, accuses the government of Pakistan of playing a key role in Pearl's abduction and murder. So it raised eyebrows when the L.A. Times Book Review - run by editor Steve Wasserman - had Pakistani critic Mahnaz Ispahani review Levy's work.

Not surprisingly, Ispahani tore the book to pieces in an article that Melville House founder Dennis Johnson says was so factually inaccurate "one could only assume she didn't even read the book."

It seems that the more time goes by, the bigger a joke the media becomes.

Mon, Oct 27 2003

Happy Monday. I have some good news for a change. I am still insanely busy, but not nearly as busy as I was last week. So I should be able to get a couple of meaty articles up. Still considering how lousy the economy is, I am gratified that I was so busy. Did a lot of spook shows, scared and impressed a whole lot of people. And had some fun. Now if I can just shake this cold everything will be perfect.

I am getting ready to change a few things on the blog. We will discuss it this week and hopefully get some feedback. Those of you that have been here a while might remember the outpouring of help I got when I designed my blog's template. I could not keep up with all those letters I failed to get. I mean, if it were up to my readers, this blog would have been just one great big blank (and I have heard that there are those out there that would have preferred it). Lucky I am not considering change that large...just some stylizing changes.

So keep an eye out and hopefully things will be back to normal starting.....ummmm.....tomorrow. Yah, that's it....tomorrow.

Hope the week is grand.

It is times like these that make me embarrassed to be a Texan:

*** PRESS RELEASE ***

Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas and affiliated groups organize to Promote America, Demote the UN on United Nations Day

WHAT: United Nations Day - Protest

WHEN: This Friday, October 24th at 6PM

WHERE: 11th Street, in front of the south State Capital, Austin, Texas

Austin, TX -- Several pro-liberty and pro-American sovereignty groups are planning a public protest speech event of the UN on United Nations Day. This Friday, October 24th, at the Texas State Capital, these groups plan to mock the United Nations Flag to underscore the miserable failure of the UN in its self-proclaimed mission.

Founded fifty-eight years ago "to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights", according to it's own web site, the United Nations has proven to be a miserable failure.

Don Zimmerman, Executive Director of the Republican Liberty Caucus, cites the UN for its failure in the Korean War. "The Korean War was the first serious test of the UN's claim to be an effective organization for 'promoting peace and security'. Under UN auspices, a Korean war was waged that cost over 34,000 American lives, and over 500,000 Korean and Chinese lives. One $trillion American taxpayer dollars and fifty years of foreign military presence later, the Korean peninsula awakens to a nuclear nightmare from the impoverished North. How is it that the UN still expects us to celebrate their failed global imperialism - in virtually every part of the world?"

Various grassroots leaders have proposed other uses for the worthless UN's flag. Some suggestions proposed for the protest:

  • beach towels

  • head-piece burqas and bandannas

  • door mats

  • animal bedding

  • and OTHER

The group will read a proclamation prior to the flag ceremonies.

Without comment because....well I'm speechless. With so much going wrong in this state....

Who Says Racism Isn't Respectable

A new board game claims racial stereotypes can be fun!

I'm not sure if it is sweeping the nation but it's surely creating a stir!

I am talking about the new board game Ghettopoly. Brainchild of David Chang it provides hours of fun at the expense of African Americans. So hilarious, I am told, is this game that I must lack a sense of humor not to "get it". Well just call me humor impaired because I don't "get it". Not at all.

Here are some of the features that I don't get.

Game Properties Include:

  • Harlem, Hells Kitchen and The Bronx

  • Smitty’s XXX Peep Show, Hernando’s Chop Shop and Weinstein’s Gold and Platnium

  • Busta Rap Recording, Ray Ray’s Chicken and Ribs and Tyron’s Gun Shop

Playa Pieces:

  • 40 ouncer of Malt

  • Pimp

  • Hoe

  • Marijuana Leaf

  • Basketball

  • Oozie

  • Crack Cocaine

Other "Hustle" cards read:

  • You and your boyz just spotted a rapper at Weinstein’s flashin some Bling Blings. You decided to jack da fool. Collect $150.

  • It’s past midnight and you’re feeling horny. Go straight to Cheap Tricks Ave. If you pass Let$ Roll Steal $$$.

Other "Ghetto Stash" cards read:

  • You found out today that the chicken head you be messin wit last night has STD’s. Pay $50 for a shot of antibiotics.

  • Go directly to Ling Ling’s Massage Parlour for some head. Steal $$$ if you pass Let$ Roll.

Damn how can I be so humorless as to fail to fall to the floor in helpless laughter?

Mr. Chang assures us that:

If you’ve had your head in the politically correct sand for the past 20 years, you may not recognize the stereotype realities in this game. David Chang, the game’s creator, said he designed it to be extreme and eye-catching; stereotypes abound, yet there’s plenty of reality.

And how do we know that there is "plenty of reality" in the game? Why by the extensive and exhaustive research that Mr. Chang did in ghetto life:

Market Research

Chang did market research by watching MTV and studying the lyrics of rap and hip-hop music. Video games provided him insight into the culture of the ghetto.

Well with such a qualified background I can see how Mr. Chang brings a fresh insight into life in the ghetto! I guess we all owe Mr. Chang a great big "Thank You".

You can read all about Mr. Chang's great game by clicking here (warning .pdf file). He even helpfully provides a phone number in case anyone has any questions. I leave it as an exercise in Google skills for those that want to find the website where one can purchase this racist travesty. I don't feel like I have to help Mr. Chang put any more yen in his pocket.

Man I am sooooo glad that racism is dead in this country!

Spinning David Kay's Testimony to Congress

Bush/Cheney decides the American People have no memory

I got some more email from the Bush/Cheney camp, this time assuring me that David Kay had found loads of evidence that Saddam was as big a threat as George W. Bush claimed he was. But was he? Just what does the Kay report reveal about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction?

Well we don't know. We don't know because the White House is not going to release the Kay report till only Jesus knows when. But we do have David's declassified report to Congress.

But first, here is the email I got:

New Report Discloses Dozens of Weapons of Mass Destruction Program Activities in Iraq

According to the Wall Street Journal a new report shows that Saddam Hussein had "dozens of WMD-related program activities and significant amounts of equipment that Iraq concealed from the United Nations during the inspections that began in late 2002." The Wall Street Journal makes note of the findings to rebut other media reports that say the latest inspections by U.S. inspector, David Kay have unearthed no new information in his short, three month search.

The revelations about Hussein's weapons of terror include a prison laboratory complex "possibly used in human testing of BW agents" in addition to strains of biological organisms that could be used as weapons, reports the Journal. The assignment has also served to spotlight Saddam's success in deceiving the United Nations and the world as to the state of his weapons programs.

The Wall Street Journal concludes by saying, "Even if no stockpiles are ever found, the Kay report provides ample proof of Saddam's WMD threat and how much safer the world is with him out of power."

Ah the very essence of lowered expectations. You can't help but notice that we have gone from "Saddam's weapons of mass destruction are a clear and present danger to the US" to "Well Saddam had big, really big, huge when you think about it...plans".

What struck me as funny is that Bush/Cheney did not rely on David's testimony, but a report in the Wall Street Journal. The email does not link to the actual article and I did not bother to look it up, I can read propaganda anytime. But you would have thought they would have linked directly to Dave's testimony. Perhaps this is why they did not:

Multiple sources with varied access and reliability have told ISG that Iraq did not have a large, ongoing, centrally controlled CW program after 1991. Information found to date suggests that Iraq's large-scale capability to develop, produce, and fill new CW munitions was reduced - if not entirely destroyed - during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Fox, 13 years of UN sanctions and UN inspections. We are carefully examining dual-use, commercial chemical facilities to determine whether these were used or planned as alternative production sites.

We have also acquired information related to Iraq's CW doctrine and Iraq's war plans for OIF, but we have not yet found evidence to confirm pre-war reporting that Iraqi military units were prepared to use CW against Coalition forces. Our efforts to collect and exploit intelligence on Iraq's chemical weapons program have thus far yielded little reliable information on post-1991 CW stocks and CW agent production, although we continue to receive and follow leads related to such stocks. We have multiple reports that Iraq retained CW munitions made prior to 1991, possibly including mustard - a long-lasting chemical agent - but we have to date been unable to locate any such munitions.

and:

Despite evidence of Saddam's continued ambition to acquire nuclear weapons, to date we have not uncovered evidence that Iraq undertook significant post-1998 steps to actually build nuclear weapons or produce fissile material.

Over and over again we are told that Kay's team has been told of Saddam's continued interest in developing WMDs but found scant evidence that any serious weapon's building was going on.

Now let's contrast this with some of the Bush/Cheney comments before the war:

"The issue is that he's developing and has biological weapons," - Vice President Dick Cheney on Late Edition (CNN) March 24, 2002.

"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies and against us." - Vice President Dick Cheney, in a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Aug. 26, 2002.

"We have sources that tell us that Saddam Hussein recently authorized Iraqi field commanders to use chemical weapons - the very weapons the dictator tells the world he does not have." - Secretary of State Colin Powell to the United Nations on Feb. 5, 2003.

"Iraq also possesses a force of Scud-type missiles with ranges beyond the 150 kilometers permitted by the U.N." - President George W. Bush to the United Nations on Sept. 12, 2002.

"Iraq employs capable nuclear scientists and technicians. It retains physical infrastructure needed to build a nuclear weapon. Iraq has made several attempts to buy high-strength aluminum tubes used to enrich uranium for a nuclear weapon. Should Iraq acquire fissile material, it would be able to build a nuclear weapon within a year. And Iraq's state-controlled media has reported numerous meetings between Saddam Hussein and his nuclear scientists, leaving little doubt about his continued appetite for these weapons." - Ibid.

Hell I could go on and on. It was not programs that Bush/Cheney were warning us about, it was full blown weapons that were a direct threat.

There is little doubt at this point that the Bush/Cheney team lied about just how big a threat Iraq's WMDs were to the US and now they are trying to spin spin spin.

On one hand we have this email from the Bush/Cheney campaign:

Job Growth in September Suggests "Turnaround" in the Job Market

A report released today shows that 57,000 new jobs were created in September, "suggesting a turnaround" in the job market according to the Associated Press.

The growing job market is just the latest sign of a stronger economy. With 3.3% growth in the second quarter of 2003 and a projected 6% growth in the third and fourth quarters, one economist saw a "Bush Boom" ahead.

On the other hand we have this:

A warning by the U.S. Labor Department that it expects to revise down past employment data pours cold water on the view of some economists who believed the jobs market had been improving for some time, analysts said on Friday.

Statisticians at the Labor Department said they expect to revise down U.S. payroll employment by about 145,000 for the March 2003 reference month -- effectively showing even greater weakness in the sluggish labor market than previously thought.

The downward adjustment surprised Wall Street, which had been rife with speculation this week that Labor would adjust the figures up, bringing payrolls more in line with another survey which has shown a recent improvement in the job market.

I usually don't update on the weekends but I got some sad news last night.

Roy Horn of the magic team of Siegfried & Roy was attacked and mauled by one of his own tigers. According to CBS News:

Superstar illusionist Roy Horn of the duo "Siegfried & Roy" was in critical condition Saturday, after a tiger attacked him during a sold-out performance, authorities said.

An audience member at The Mirage hotel-casino show Friday night said the white tiger lunged at Horn, who tried to beat the animal off with a microphone.

"The tiger went for his neck, then drug him offstage," said Andy Cushman, a 23-year-old reporter from New Jersey. "He looked like a rag doll."

Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said Horn had a serious injury to the left side of his neck. Feldman said Horn, who turned 59 on Friday, underwent several hours of surgery.

"It just missed his carotid artery," said Bobby Baldwin, CEO of Mirage Resorts.

Horn was in critical but stable condition at University Medical Center, said hospital spokeswoman Cheryl Persinger.

Our thoughts are with him.

TGIF

What a week eh?

All this stuff going on and I don't update all week.

If it does any good I do have an excuse. Once again I am attempting to quit smoking. As anyone that has tried to quit will tell you, my temper is not the longest it has been in my life. So needless to say it is very hard to write a "fair and balanced" blog entry while wanting to kill everyone in the world.

The Bush White House revealed the name of a CIA operative? CALL OUT THE FIRING SQUAD.

Er, no can't use that.

Rush Limbaugh is a racist pill gobbler? THROW HIS FAT ASS IN JAIL!

Hummm, maybe a tad intemperate

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Hitler loving sex harasser? CUT OFF HIS ARMS, LEGS, AND PENIS!

Naw probably not.

So I have not done a lot of writing this week. Perhaps it will be better next week.

In addition October is a very busy month for magicians. Especially me. It's time for my regular Halloween Seance Show. If you live in Houston Texas and would like to see the most scary show in town just click here and I will be more than happy to send you information.

This is going to be a fun weekend. First, on Saturday October 4th we will be attending the Second Annual Aloha Fest being held at Landolt Pavilion in Clear Lake Park. You don't have to be Hawaiian to attend so if you are in the area drop on by.

And of course this is the starting weekend for The Texas Renaissance Festival. We will be attending this Sunday in full costume as usual.

Hopefully I will have a load of pictures to share with everyone next week. Perhaps my temper will be a bit more moderate by then.

Have a great weekend!
