Tournament Rules and Deck Construction
will be per Wizards of the Coast
guidelines except as modified
below or by the tournament judge at the time of the
tournament. Please be ready to
provide card lists for any constructed deck.
This is a standard Standard Tournament.
Decks should be constructed using the
applicable card list / series
list and rules for late June 2002.
Event 2: Special Event Tournament
Note: Either Event 2a or Event 2b will take place, so please come prepared for either.
Event 2a: Sealed Deck Odyssey™ Trilogy
This will be a Sealed Deck Tournament
using one Odyssey™ sealed deck and two
boosters from Odyssey™, Torment™,
and/or Judgment™. All decks and boosters
must be purchased at San Con IX
from the vendors. Players will construct decks
from the cards purchased for this
tournament.
Event 2b: Monochromatic Type I Tournament
This is a Type I Tournament with the following additional deck construction limitations.
(i) Decks shall be constructed using only cards from one basic color -- black, blue, green, red, or white.
(i a) Note that this rule implicitly excludes gold cards because they are inherently multicolored rather than monochromatic.
(i b) This rule applies to every card in the deck for this tournament, whether it is used alone or with another card or cards.
(ii) Decks may use only one card
title of basic land -- swamp, island, forest, mountain, or plain. As normal,
the number of basic lands is not limited. Non-basic
lands may be used normally, at
up to four per card title per deck.
(iii) Decks shall include no more
than four artifacts, either artifact creatures or artifacts, total. Note
that this limit applies to the total number of artifact cards in the
deck and not just to the number
of different artifact card titles in the deck.
(iv) Ineffective/"Forbidden" Attributes:
Due to the special nature of Event 2b, effects or attributes that provide
protection versus a single color for any number of
your cards, either explicitly
or as a player option, or effects that target all copies of a single basic
land, or effects that can affect more than one card of a specific color,
are
ineffective. In other words, a
player could cast "Circle of Protection: Green" or "Karma," but neither
card would have an effect versus your opponent or your
opponent’s cards. Likewise, creatures
with an inherent "Protection from [some color]" may still use their inherent
protection, but they may not transfer that
attribute from themselves to another
card by any means. Thus, "Obsidian Acolyte" retains its "Protection from
black," but it may not use its special ability to provide
"Protection from black" to other
creatures either through its own ability or coupled with any other card
or cards. Further, "Northern Paladin" retains its "Protection
from black," but its special ability
to destroy any black permanent is not effective. Finally, cards like "Disorder"
would also be ineffective.
(v) Please also note that cards with only a few exceptions to their playability, like "Dark Banishing" or "Seeker," are not excluded under rule (iv).
This is a standard Type I Tournament. Decks should be constructed using the appropriate card list and rules for late June 2002.
Players for the Overall Tournament title shall compete in Event 1, Event 2, and Event 3, as described above.
(i) Players that do not participate in one or more of the events above are disqualified from winning the Overall Tournament title.
(ii) Further, to qualify for the Overall Tournament title, a player must win at least half (50%) of all the matches he or she plays for Event 1, Event 2, and Event 3.
(iii) Players in Event 4 are eligible for individual prizes from Event 1, Event 2, and Event 3 normally.
(iv) If necessary, additional rounds
will be played to break any ties between players for the Overall Tournament
title. Any such tie-breaking rounds will use the players’
decks from the Standard Tournament,
Event 1 above.
All Magic: The Gathering™ Events:
(i) As is customary, a "bye" counts
as a victory in any event. However, the tournament judge will work to insure
that individual players do not receive an unfair
advantage from unplayed rounds
over the whole day. (In other words, the tournament judge hopes to limit
players to not more than one "bye" round
throughout the entire day. As
noted above, San Con IX assumes players come to play games, not watch games!)
(ii) Standard sideboards are allowed,
but not required, for all pre-constructed and sealed-deck events. Along
with the listing for the deck, please provide a listing of
the sideboard for all pre-constructed
decks.
(iii) Proxy cards are not allowed,
although card sleeves may be permitted according to the standard rules
for them. (In other words, your opponent may request that you
not use card sleeves, and the
card sleeves themselves may not in any way "mark" cards.)
