SYNOPSIS

INDEX of SUSPICION

A midsummer's night
in
Houston, Texas.

It's an election year. The presidential nominating process is about to kick off. Suddenly one of the front running candidates is seriously attacked by a raging feline which he encounters inside his darkened limousine in the parking lot of a suburban country club. By a curious happenstance Dr. Duncan MacDonell, the feisty Houston city veterinarian, is the first person on the scene.

Using the skills he taught in his prior military service, Dr. Mac provides basic first aid, then arranges to have the animal impounded. When he learns who the victim is Mac also arranges to have the animal taken to his own facility where he supervises the humane destruction of the cat and the submission of the animal's brain tissue to the state's regional rabies diagnostics laboratory.

As the evening wears on, Mac consults with the treating physician and explains that the laboratory is closed for the weekend, but promises that the appropriate tests will be completed as rapidly as possible.

Then, in the early hours of the morning, the report comes that the animal's brain is negative for the rabies viris.

In spite of his obvious injuries, the candidate (swathed in bandages) receives his party's nomination and begins the long campaign process. However, an illness does set in. Soon things begin going from bad to worse, the election process is disrupted, and MacDonell finds himself the prime target of an intense FBI investigation. Mac will need all his strength, wit, and diagnostic skills to untangle the mystery and clear his name.

And, as readers should expect, Dr. Mac's wife, Jeannie, contributes in large measure to her husband's wide-ranging search for the truth.
