Virtual Field Trip to the Austin Chalk Group
Below is a simplified stratigraphic section through the entire Austin Chalk Group, as it occurs in Travis County, central Texas. To take a virtual trip to any of the formations, click on that portion of the stratigraphic section about which you are interested. Currently the Vinson Chalk and the Pflugerville Formation are not 100% ready for viewing. They are presented in various states of completion. For these, partial portions of the entire section are presented, or complete sections with incomplete discussions are given. You are free to enjoy them in any case. Some renovation is underway on this page. You may experience some minor navigation problems. Hopefully the added content will compensate for any inconvenience.
Before you take the trip...
I know you are really excited to start your virtual trip to the Austin Chalk, but before you set off into the amazing word of Cretaceous stratigraphy, there are some things you should know.
1) You should know where in the world the trip goes (hint: U.S.A. Texas).
2) You should know something about the lithologies of the various Formations of the Austin.
4) You should know
something about the geology of central Texas, and how this effects the way field work on
the Austin Chalk is conducted.
5) You should remember that I put a fair amount of time in to making a lot of the
material on this trip, and so I like to ask you to respect that it is my property.
Please don't copy or misuse it without getting permission from me first. Thank you.
