A library can and should be so much more than just a place to store books. It can be both a quiet refuge and a place where the activity of learning is encouraged. The Forest Gate Library shown above started out with the need to store precious books and maps. It is part of the master suite but is fully soundproofed and raised one step to create a sense of peaceful separation. The full height bookcases became an extension of the raised block paneling and provided visible and concealed storage for atlas' as well as concealed drawers for documentation of provenance. The illuminated globe provides a reference for locating ancient lands and the Atlas stand gives proper support to heavy volumes and presents them at a comfortable height for viewing while standing. Small details like a hidden drawer for a magnifying glass and archival materials help to personalize the room and it's contents. Other pieces in the suite included a map table and a 24 drawer archival flat file for map storage. |
