International Listener
Shortwave web sites, radio webcasts and other world band radio links
International Listener features links to shortwave radio stations around the world, and launches webcasts and on-demand radio programs so that you can hear these broadcasts through your computer. First appearing in magazine form in the 1970's, International Listener was published as a monthly 40-page program guide for English-language broadcasts. That magazine became a web site on January 22nd, 1999. The site disappeared when Tropical Storm Allison flooded the webmaster's home in June 2001 (hit counter at 49838), but International Listener reappeared in January 2003 with new looks and functionality. You can hear live streaming and on-demand audio from international shortwave broadcasters by using the drop-down menu near the bottom of this page. There are more audio links on the International Listener Shortwave Radio Stations page. Throughout this web site, there is a 24-hour clock that displays the time in GMT, or Greenwich Mean Time (also known as UTC, or Coordinated Universal Time). The Google search engine is featured throughout this site.
There's a new edition of the International Listener Shortwave News each month--a roundup of items gleaned from radio station web sites and shortwave news sources from around the world.
Find searchable shortwave schedules at International Listener Shortwave Links, as well as listening clubs, audio archives and receiver manufacturers. There are readings of current solar weather affecting radio propagation from NOAA, courtesy of Majestic Research. BBC World Service schedules from DigiGuide are available by clicking on the BBC logo. Also, you can be transported to a webcast of shows from the Golden Age of radio. The Google search engine is featured and links to other popular search engines are provided.
If you listen to world band radio, you're probably a news junkie. International Listener News Organizations leads to news agencies and the news outlets of broadcasting networks from around the globe. A news ticker links to worldwide news, sports and shortwave news. There are U. S. and British newspapers, as well as a special section of UK comics and magazines. There's a searchable weather database from the Weather Channel with an embedded converter for translating Centigrade into Fahrenheit. The Google search engine is featured and there are links to other search engines.
This web site is maintained by a Texan who loves everything British. There are London and UK radio stations with webcast links at International Listener British Radio, and live streaming and on-demand audio is made easily accessible with a drop-down menu. You'll find DigiGuide schedules of the national UK networks. There's news from the British radio industry, courtesy of UK Radio.com. Other interesting sites from Great Britain are included. London's current weather conditions and forecast are available from the Weather Channel with an embedded converter for translating Centigrade into Fahrenheit.
Check International Listener Television for links to launch TV webcasts and playbacks of individual television programs, plus DigiGuide British TV schedules. Some favorite UK program links are featured.
Shortwave club publications, magazines and books are described in the International Listener Library. Writer Chris Brand wrote about International Listener in his "Radio-Related Websites" column in the March 2003 issue of the British magazine Radio Active.
A Visit to Bush House
is our exclusive look inside the London
headquarters of the BBC World Service.
Included are our photographs from a December 5th, 2002 inside Bush House, as well as interviews with
studio manager Doreen Birkeland,
assistant senior studio manager Chris Murphy,
newsroom editor Steve Titherington (now with a sound file of the full-length interview), senior producer Josephine Hazely from the African
languages section (also with a sound file of the full interview), as well as
Robin White, editor-in-chief of the quarterly BBC magazine Focus on Africa. And noting the BBC's interest in American news
stories like Enron/Andersen, there are exclusive interviews with World Business
Report presenter Roger White, business editor Martin Webber and a link to
hear a stateside interview with BBC World Service business reporter Mark Gregory. My short video
(Windows Media Player) featuring BBC
Bush House, Broadcasting House and some favorite London sights is now on the
Bush House page.
