In this first stage of sketching I work small and fast. I don't worry about the details, I'm just trying to see what works together on the page.

When I see something that I think is working, I will then do a tighter sketch. Here I start to think about where the type will go and the size of the page.

The next step for me is to do an even tighter sketch with all the details I want in the drawing. I then scan the drawing into the computer so I can print it out at any size. I then start to play with color. I use colored pencils for this. Since it's the low point for Sam I thought the sunset and him being in shadow would emphasize the mood.

Now it's time to paint. I do the painting a little bigger than what the final book size is. I use acrylic paints on gessoed watercolor paper.
