Sheldon Reservoir
Sheldon Reservoir is a 2500 acre Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Northeast Houston managed by the TP&WD. The levees encompass about 1200 acres of lake, marsh and swamp. The area south of Garrett Road, which cuts through the middle of the WMA, is a large shallow lake with many small rows and clumps of trees and shrubs scattered across the water. Waterfowl are abundant. Herons, Egrets, Ibis and other birds congregate in large numbers in the scattered trees. North of Garrett Road the habitat is more cypress swamp. Putting your canoe in at the Garrett Rd. bridge, one can paddle up a several hundred feet wide open channel bordered by moderately sized Cypress trees and thick marsh. Cormorants, Ibis and Herons roost in large numbers on several towering dead snags in the middle of the open water. At times, the open channel can be thick with surface vegetation, which can make for slow going. Further up Carpenter's Bayou the open channel narrows and the canopy closes overhead.
