"Cabaret it ain't." But Velvet Goldmine is a musical in the same vein as the Bob Fosse classicthe music is sung from the stage and pushes the plot forward.
Director Todd Haynes takes us back to the '70s glam-rock era in London where young people experimented with their sexuality, due in part to the likes of David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and Brian Ferry. Their music was more than musicit was show: extraordinary costumes, outrageous hair and makeup, and compelling performances. Goldmine is a gem.
